Mining communities around the world have different stories to tell. While these communities face common enemies, their action varies in shapes and forms. From the Philippines to Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea, the stories of resistance have a common theme – the power of collective action and the spirit of coming together goes beyond borders.

The pandemic has exposed the fragilities in the current world order; it has dented global economies to regression, and the global mining industry is one of the most affected sectors.

The Mining sector in Mongolia has grown over the past 20 years. The latest official statistics revealed that there are 2,814 valid mineral licenses, of which 1,665 are mining licenses while 1,149 licenses are exploration licenses.

With border controls, lockdowns and restrictions on people’s mobility, the global economy has been clearly crippled by the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. As of August 14, 2020, it has infected 20 million people with at least 749,000 deaths. Amid this “new normal”, how does global mining Industry fare?

The Asia Pacific Network of Environmental Defenders participated in the ASEAN People’s Forum (APF) launched on September 10-12, 2019 at the Thammasat University Convention Center in Rangsit Campus in Pathumthani Province, Thailand. The theme of APF for the year was “Advancing People’s Movements for Justice, Peace, Equality, Sustainability and Democracy in Southeast Asia.”

The Asia Pacific Network of Environment Defenders (APNED) officially launched its formation amid a siege by Indonesian police and public authorities against the People’s Global Conference Against IMF-World Bank (PGC), the CSO-led parallel activity to the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank happening from October 9 to 14, 2018 in Bali, Indonesia where APNED is participating.

Groups and individuals who advocate and work on the issue of human rights, environmental protection and natural resource conservation from across 13 countries launched the Asia Pacific Network of Environmental Defenders (APNED) in Bali, Indonesia, October 11, 2018.

The APNED is an initiative borne out of the urgency to act on the worsening situations of environment defenders in the Asia
Pacific. It is a solidarity network of individuals, civil society groups, and peoples’ organizations in the region united in defending and reclaiming the rights of environment defenders, and their communities to life and the right to live in harmony with nature.
