APNED goes to COP30!
As the fight to protect and recognize the rights of our environmental defenders continues, APNED heads to COP30 in Belém, Brazil, to demand our advocacies.
With the upcoming action-packed conference, here is our schedule of side events, exhibits, and actions.
- Side Event: Environmental Defenders and Communities: A Cross-cutting priority in climate negotiations and decisions

Organizers: Global Witness, CAMBIAMO, Civicus, Fédération Internationale des Ligues des Droits de l’Homme, Natural Justice, and the Asia Pacific Network of Environmental Defenders
Description: Environmental human rights defenders (EHRDs), including women EHRDs and frontline communities are essential to climate justice and resilience. All negotiations should integrate discussions that recognize their rights, ensure their protection, and guarantee their active participation in shaping climate decisions.

Description: Across the Global South, land, Indigenous, and environmental defenders protect forests, rivers, and territories but face harassment, displacement, and death. This storytelling event honors their courage through portraits and stories of resistance, hope, and justice, amplifying voices and calling for global protection and inclusion in the climate agenda.

Description: Militarism protects fossil fuel interests and enables imperialist powers to plunder resources and repress climate activists and environmental defenders. Across the Global South, wars devastate ecosystems and communities. The event serves as a platform for grassroots communities to share their lived experiences, raise their calls, and foster solidarity.
- Side Event: Human Rights Defenders in Action: Challenges, Strategies, and Political Advocacy in the Global Climate Agenda

Description:
The session will bring together human rights and environmental defenders from Latin America and the Global South to discuss the main challenges and strategies for protection and political advocacy, in light of the growing criminalization of activists and shrinking democratic spaces.

Organizers: Home of Sibuyan Island Peoples (BSI) and Center for Environmental Concerns – Philippines / Asia Pacific Network of Environmental Defenders
Description: This exhibition presents best practices of grassroots communities on climate action and promoting integral ecology onto inclusive and transformative advocacies and programs. The venue also provides space for interaction between and among environmental defenders.
