[PUBLICATION] Bravery Amidst Adversity: A Glimpse at the Critical State of the Environmental Human Rights Defenders in South Asia

March 15, 2024

APNED is pleased to release a publication entitled Bravery Amidst Adversity, a report on the critical situation of environmental human rights defenders in South Asia, focusing in particular on Bangladesh, India, and Nepal.

South Asia’s extreme vulnerability to climate change is clear. Yet even as the harmful impacts of the climate crisis intensify in the region, South Asian environmental human rights defenders (EHRDs), those who do critical work to defend their lands, waters, and communities against socially and environmentally destructive projects, are experiencing greater attacks, ranging from state-sponsored harassment to killings. This report looks into cases of violence experienced by South Asian EHRDs, and offers insights from trends in their opposition and resistance to projects like mega-dams and large-scale mining.

This publication was produced with the invaluable input of South Asian environmental defenders, as well as with the support of the Climate and Land Use Alliance (CLUA).
