Environmental defenders and civic space has been increasingly under threat the last few years in the Philippines. Those who protect our ecosystems and the communities directly impacted by it degradation are unjustly targeted by state forces and policies. The Philippines, holds the title as the most dangerous country for environmental defenders for 10 years in a row, according to independent human rights watchdog, Global Witness.

This publication aims to shed light on the relationship between the drivers of environmental degradation, climate crisis, and human rights violations against environmental and climate defenders. It will analyze the situation of EHRDs in Southeast Asia and illustrate their pivotal role in protecting environmental and human rights. It examines trends in attacks on EHRDs within the last ten years (2012–2022), specifically those relating to climate change, through aggregate data of individual cases gathered from secondary sources. The countries included in this study are Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand, some of the most climate-vulnerable countries and countries with the highest number of killings of EHRDs. It also highlights stories from these countries for in-depth discussion and analysis. Finally, it concludes that addressing the climate crisis in Southeast Asia entails urgent and comprehensive efforts to protect environmental defenders.
